What Are The EYLF and MTOP?
If you have a child in early learning or school-age care, you may hear educators talk about the EYLF or MTOP. These may sound like complex educational terms, but at their heart, they are simply frameworks that guide how children are supported to learn, grow and develop in education and care settings across Australia.
At Tillys, these frameworks help guide our everyday practices and educational experiences.
What Is the EYLF?
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) is a national framework used in early childhood education for children from birth to five years. It provides a shared understanding of what children should experience and learn during their early years.
The EYLF focuses on the whole child — recognising that learning happens through play, relationships and everyday experiences, not just formal teaching.
What Is MTOP?
My Time, Our Place (MTOP) is the national framework for school-age children in outside school hours care. This includes before/after school care and vacation care, otherwise known as OOSH (Outside Of School Hours) or OSHC (Outside School Hours Care).
MTOP supports children to continue learning through play, relationships and meaningful experiences as they grow older, build independence and develop a strong sense of identity.
Why Are These Frameworks Important?
Both the EYLF and MTOP help ensure that children across Australia receive high-quality, consistent education and care, no matter where they attend.
They guide educators to support children’s:
- Social and emotional development
- Physical health and wellbeing
- Language and communication skills
- Thinking, learning and problem-solving
- Sense of belonging, confidence and independence
These frameworks help children develop the skills they need for school, relationships and life.
The EYLF & MTOP Learning Outcomes
The EYLF and MTOP are built around five key learning outcomes. In simple terms, children are supported to:
- Feel safe, secure and confident
- Build strong relationships and a sense of belonging
- Develop wellbeing and healthy habits
- Become confident learners who enjoy exploring and trying new things
- Communicate effectively through language, play and creativity
These outcomes guide educators when planning experiences and supporting each child’s development.
How EYLF and MTOP guide practice at Tillys
At Tillys, our educators use the EYLF and MTOP to:
- Plan meaningful, play-based learning experiences
- Observe and understand each child’s interests and development
- Support children at their individual pace
- Build strong relationships with children and families
- Reflect on and improve their teaching practices
This ensures children are supported holistically — emotionally, socially, physically and cognitively.
What This Means for Families
For families, the EYLF and MTOP provide reassurance that:
- Your child is learning through play and real-life experiences
- Educators are following best practice and national standards
- Your child’s wellbeing and development are at the centre of all decisions
- Learning is tailored to your child as an individual
Supporting Children for Life
The Early Years Learning Framework and My Time, Our Place are more than guiding principles — they are foundations for lifelong learning. By guiding how educators support children in their early years and beyond, these frameworks help children build confidence, resilience and a love of learning.
At Tillys, we are proud to follow the EYLF and MTOP, ensuring every child is supported to grow, learn and thrive in a safe, nurturing and engaging environment. 🌱
