Tillys Waratah 2 is committed to improving our sustainability practices, and this week for National Recycling Week our service sustainability leader Kat, has kicked off a new project. Kat has designed a community library for children in the service to begin borrowing from.
There are many books already to choose from in the library however, in light of National Recycling Week, each preschool child will be given one sticker. Families wishing to participate, will place the sticker on a donated book and return to the service to be placed in the library. In return children will be encouraged to select another book to take home and read. Families are more then welcome to continue to exchange books from the library by bring these books back and selecting another one.
The Benefits of reading to your child:
• Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading and cognitive skills (i.e., language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) later in life.
• Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older.
• Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older.
You may also notice that Kat has placed some seedlings, that have been grown here at Tillys Waratah by the children. Families are more than welcome to take them home and grow in their own gardens. You will also find complementary worm juice, from our very own worm farms in the bottom draw to help them thrive
