Recently, Educators from Tillys Waratah 2 spent the morning intentionally engaging with the Salamander Bay Recycle Centre and local op shops to thoughtfully source resources that would enhance and enrich their learning environments.
With each room allocated a budget, educators carefully selected ceramic pieces, glassware and silverware, considering how these authentic, open-ended materials could support children’s curiosity, creativity and sensory exploration. This process reinforced the understanding that environments in early childhood are a powerful third teacher, shaping how children interact, explore and learn.
By choosing real, pre-loved items, educators are creating inviting and aesthetically rich spaces that encourage respect for materials, imaginative play and deeper engagement, while also modelling sustainability and community connection. These thoughtfully curated environments foster a sense of belonging, promote meaningful learning experiences and support children to explore concepts through hands-on, intentional play.
