Recently, we have been learning about germs here at Tillys Abermain. We have been doing experiments on the effects of soap and what it does to germs.
In this experiment we used black pepper and poppy seeds to represent the ‘germs’. The children put their fingers in the seeds and pepper and then put their fingers in the ‘germy’ water on the plate. We noticed that the ‘germs’ stuck to their fingers because there was nothing to protect them.
The children were then encouraged to put their fingers in to the soap container and then back into the ‘germy’ water. We saw that the ‘germs’ moved away from our fingers, which was a good reminder as to why we need to use soap and wash our hands properly – because if we don’t use soap the germs won’t wash off our fingers.
We then practiced the correct hand washing technique and had a discussion about the different times of the day when we need to wash our hands. 💦
