Embracing Risky Play Through Confidence and Teamwork
At Tillys Abermain, we recognise the incredible value of risky play and are committed to supporting children as they safely explore challenges that spark their curiosity and interests.
Recently, the children wanted to make one of their favourite balancing experiences even more challenging. With the close supervision and support of our educators, they worked together to position a balance beam on a higher incline using one of the bridge railings.
The children eagerly took turns climbing up the beam and sliding back down, encouraging one another along the way. As they explored the challenge, they stopped to observe their peers, noticing how they positioned their hands, feet, and bodies to successfully climb the incline. Some children asked for assistance when they needed it, while others used trial and error to discover what worked best for them. They even experimented with wearing shoes, socks, or going barefoot to see which gave them the best grip.
Throughout the experience, we talked about the large muscle groups they were using and how climbing strengthened their bodies. We also discussed perseverance, resilience, and the importance of trying different strategies when something feels difficult.
Risky play provides children with opportunities to develop confidence, problem-solving skills, body awareness, balance, coordination, and resilience. By allowing children to assess risk, make decisions, and challenge themselves in a supported environment, they build the confidence to take on new experiences and celebrate their achievements.
At Tillys Abermain, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when children are trusted to challenge themselves, supported by educators who are there to guide, encourage, and celebrate every success along the way.
