Creativity in Motion
At Tillys Abermain, we have been exploring new and exciting ways to create art by combining movement with creativity!
Our children have been working collaboratively on a large piece of canvas, experimenting with different ways to make marks using paint. Instead of painting while standing or sitting, we challenged the children to think differently about how their bodies could move while creating.
One experience involved children lying on their tummies on the swing, gently swinging forwards, backwards, and side to side as they painted across the canvas. We also introduced swivel chairs, allowing the children to spin, turn, and rotate their bodies while making colourful brushstrokes. These unique experiences encouraged the children to explore how different movements created different patterns, lines, and textures.
This collaborative artwork has been about much more than painting. It has supported the development of gross motor skills, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and body control while encouraging creativity, experimentation, and problem-solving. Working together on one shared canvas has also promoted communication, cooperation, and a sense of belonging as each child contributed their own unique marks to the final masterpiece.
At Tillys Abermain, we love creating opportunities where children can learn through movement, exploration, and open-ended experiences. Sometimes, changing the way we move can inspire a whole new way of thinking and creating!
