Sometimes, the most meaningful learning begins with a single idea.

At Tillys Abermain, one of our children designed a dress using a variety of materials, sparking the curiosity of the entire group. What started as one child’s creative expression quickly grew into a collaborative project, with children eager to explore fashion, design, and artistic creativity in their own unique ways.

Fashion is so much more than clothing, it is a powerful form of self-expression. It allows children to communicate their ideas, personalities, emotions, and creativity in ways that words sometimes cannot. Through designing and creating, children are discovering that there is no right or wrong way to express themselves, and that every creation tells its own unique story.

As our project evolved, we discovered the inspiring story of Max Alexander, a young fashion designer whose creativity and passion have captured the world’s attention. His beautiful couture designs, along with the work of renowned artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, and Alexander Calder, have inspired us to explore colour, texture, pattern, and the many ways artists and designers express their ideas.

The children have been experimenting with a wide variety of materials and artistic mediums, including paint, watercolours, beads, jewellery, loose parts, fabrics, and natural materials. Each material offers a new opportunity to explore texture, design, and creative possibilities.

Throughout this project, the children have embraced every stage of the design process. They have been brainstorming ideas, planning their designs, selecting materials, collaborating with one another, and even creating invitations as they prepare for something very special.

While we’re keeping the final masterpiece under wraps for now, we are incredibly excited to be working towards a special collaborative exhibition with another Tillys service.
