Indigenous Literacy Week at Fern Bay
The children in the Pelican Room at Fern Bay explored a new interest table called ‘The Colours of Worimi Land’. Miss Mel collected soil and sand samples from our local environment and matched these samples with photos from the locations they were collected from. There were white and yellow sands from the sand dunes and the bay. There was shell grit from the ocean and red and black sands from the bush and the scrub areas. A sample of ash and charcoal from the recent burn offs was also collected, and this process explained to the children. Each picture had the Gathang language the language of the Worimi people and a small blurb about the significance of each area has to the Worimi people. Our Pelican children loved touching and smelling the samples of Worimi land, loving experiencing and expanding on our recent learning about the significance of the land to Worimi people and the diversity of our local natural environments in a hands on fun and meaningful way.
