Our Rutherford centre had a very busy Monday kicking off National Science Week!
This morning, the Monkeys and Meerkats rooms were excited to start their day off with an experiment! During this experiment the children predicted what they thought would happen when adding each material to the water. The children were excited to discover that the shaving cream floats on water! Next we added food dye and again the children predicted what would happen. They noticed that the food dye went through the shaving cream and dripped into the water. This experiment created an image of clouds and raindrops The children asked, “Why does the shaving cream float?”. Their educators explained, “Shaving cream floats because it is airy and light, and the weight of the water is more dense. This allows the shaving cream to float and the food dye to drip through and into the water.”
The Lions and Tigers rooms started off with a gloppy goop experiment, where educator Nadine made three different types for us to feel and use our hands to experience the textures. Next up was an experience based on volcano emotions. Nadine labeled three cups with a face – happy, sad and yucky. She then showed us what happens when you add baking soda to vinegar and we watched each cup bubble and fizz over! This experiment is relating to cause and effect.
Nadine showed us how we can make a rainbow using skittles and water. As well as lava in a glass reaction and so much more!
