The Meerkat children at Tillys Rutherford have collectively shown an interest in the story “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt”. Educator Caitlin thoughtfully extended on this interest through a wide variety of engaging experiences that brought the story to life.
Throughout the past month, the children explored each stage of the bear hunt through sensory play, creative experiences, storytelling, dramatic play, and hands-on investigations. They swished through long wavy grass, splashed through deep cold rivers, squelched through thick mud, and navigated other elements of the story using a range of sensory materials and learning environments.
These experiences encouraged the children to develop their imagination, language and literacy skills, problem-solving abilities, and social connections as they worked together to retell and recreate the story. The children’s enthusiasm and active participation demonstrated their growing confidence in storytelling and their ability to make meaningful connections between books and play.
By following the children’s interests, Caitlin created rich learning opportunities that supported engagement & curiosity.
