Early Childhood Nutrition
Early childhood nutrition plays a vital role in supporting children’s growth, development and lifelong health. The early years are a critical time to build strong foundations, helping children develop positive relationships with food that can last well beyond their time in early learning.
Building a Strong Foundation From the Start
Children’s bodies and brains grow rapidly in the early years, and the foods they eat provide the fuel they need to learn, play and thrive. Nutritious meals support:
- Brain development and concentration
- Physical growth and strong bones and muscles
- Immune system health
- Emotional regulation and energy levels
By offering balanced, nourishing foods early on, we help children develop healthy habits and preferences from the very beginning.
Exploring Foods Through the Senses
Early childhood is a time of exploration — and this includes food. Allowing children to try and taste new foods helps them become familiar with different:
- Flavours
- Textures
- Smells
- Colours and appearances
Children may need multiple opportunities to explore new foods before accepting them, and that’s okay. At Tillys, we encourage a relaxed, pressure-free approach to eating that supports curiosity and confidence around food.
How Food Supports Growing Bodies and Brains
Different foods play different roles in supporting children’s development. Nutritious meals help children understand how food:
- Gives them energy to play and learn
- Helps their bodies grow strong
- Supports brain development and focus
- Keeps them feeling well and balanced throughout the day
Through daily experiences, children begin to make connections between what they eat and how their bodies feel.

Supporting Healthy Lunch Boxes at Abermain
At our Abermain centre, families pack lunch boxes as there is no on-site kitchen. We work closely with families to promote healthy lunch boxes that align with government recommendations and guidelines.
We support families by:
- Providing clear fact sheets and resources on what to pack
- Sharing practical, nutritious lunch box ideas
- Having open, supportive conversations about balanced food choices
- Encouraging variety and inclusion of all food groups
Our goal is to work in partnership with families, offering guidance without judgement and supporting children’s nutritional needs in a positive way.
Learning About Nutrition Through Play
Nutrition education at Tillys extends far beyond mealtimes. Our educators help children understand food and nutrition through:
- Play-based learning experiences
- Role modelling healthy eating habits
- Group discussions and storytelling
- Learning plans focused on nutrition and wellbeing
These experiences help children develop an understanding of how food nourishes their bodies, supports their learning and keeps them healthy.
Nourishing Children for Life
At Tillys, we believe that nutrition is about more than just food — it’s about building confidence, knowledge and healthy habits that children can carry with them for life. By providing high-quality nutrition practices, strong guidance and meaningful learning experiences, we support children to grow, learn and thrive.
We are proud to work alongside families to give children the very best start, nurturing healthy bodies, curious minds and positive relationships with food from the very beginning. 🥕🍎🥛
