At Tillys Bolwarra the children have been engaging in a variety of sensory experiences, including different textural and smelling playdough, clay, mud, shaving cream and slime. The educators in the wombat room have provided a wonderful “messy play” experience for the children by providing them with shaving cream to touch & feel. While some children were a little unsure of the texture, others relished in the feel, covering their bodies.
The OOSH rooms have made a few different varieties of slime to share amongst themselves and the other rooms. In the preschool rooms, each new playdough batch has been a different texture or smell. The children then have the opportunity to add their own elements to the playdough. So far chocolate & vanilla smelling playdough has been the most popular.
Mud play has also been a number 1 hit. International Mud day is coming up and we plan to extend on the sensory exploration by providing lots of messy and fun experiences including mud pies and a mud slide.
Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates senses: touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing. Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore.
